The Pleated Column Chuppah is an illuminated Jewish wedding canopy whose four columns are formed from architectural pleating and lit from within. The pleats diffuse the light, so it produces a soft sculptural glow rather than the sharp defined illumination of a clear Perspex chuppah. It was first installed at The Manor Hotel in Elstree.
About the Pleated Column Chuppah
This is our newest design, and it came from a specific frustration: illuminated chuppahs have tended to mean clear acrylic, and clear acrylic gives you a hard, bright, defined light. Beautiful, but only in one register.
Pleating the columns changes the light completely. Instead of passing straight through, it catches in every fold and diffuses, so the column reads as a soft glowing sculpture rather than a lit tube. The effect is warmer and considerably more forgiving in photographs, particularly on skin tones during the ceremony.
The reference is couture rather than event hire – architectural pleating of the kind you see in a fashion house’s structural work. It suits couples whose taste runs to the modern and the refined rather than the traditional or the dramatic.
It debuted at The Manor Hotel in Elstree and the response has meant we have had to be honest with a number of couples about availability. If your date is in peak season and this is the one you want, enquire early.

Pleated Column Chuppah - your questions
Both are illuminated, but the light behaves differently. Clear Perspex gives a hard, bright, defined glow. The pleats on this one diffuse the light through every fold, producing a soft sculptural warmth that is noticeably more flattering in ceremony photography.
Warm white as standard, which suits the pleated fabric and photographs well. Other colours can be discussed if you are colour-matching a scheme, though we would usually advise against anything strong on skin tones.
Yes - the columns carry a canopy frame which is then dressed in fabric, floristry or your tallit. The columns are the centrepiece; the canopy completes the structure.
Yes. We currently hold one Pleated Column Chuppah, so peak-season Sundays go quickly. If this is the design you want, enquire as soon as you have your date rather than waiting until the rest of the wedding is planned.
